Alastair Cook plays down spat with Shane Warne

Shane Warne irked England skipper Alastair Cook with critical comments about his captaincy last year in a newspaper column when he suggested the Englishman should step down from his role.
Sharjah: England skipper Alastair Cook on Saturday said his spat with famous rival Shane Warne had been blown out of context as he insisted he now has a better relationship with the Aussie great.
Warne irked Cook with critical comments about his captaincy last year in a newspaper column when he suggested the Englishman should step down from his role.
Visibly upset at the comments, Cook hit back, saying: "Well something needs to be done because for the three years I've been England captain I have in my eyes been criticised for a hell of a lot of that."
But a courtesy visit by Warne to help England spinner Adil Rashid in the nets in Sharjah on Friday ahead of the decisive third Test against Pakistan seemed to have eased out the tension.
"He was still fairly critical in the summer as well, as (former Australian captain) Michael Clarke's best mate he was always going to do that," said Cook of Warne's comments during England's 3-2 Ashes win this year.
"Me and Warne's so-called spat, what I said was taken a little bit out of context – it was probably directed to the whole media, not just him, and people jumped on that," Cook said.
Cook said he talked to Warne on the phone last year, which helped ease the tension. "We had a phone call for an hour, hour and a half, and have stayed in contact ever since. We have a better relationship than before the phone call and it was great of him to come down. It was great of him to come down and spend some time with Rash," said Cook.
Cook believes Warne's advice will help Rashid, who made his debut in the drawn first Test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi. "For a young leg-spinner to spend time with the greatest ever and have access to him, and for him to be so open with Adil, was brilliant," said Cook of the meeting.
"Me listening to what he was telling Rash was fantastic and we are very grateful to him. I'm sure the Pakistanis were as well with Yasir, so he's just evening himself out," said Cook.
Rashid will be key to England's plans as they seek to level the series in the third and final Test starting on Sunday. Pakistan won the second Test in Dubai to take a 1-0 lead. "Hopefully Rash took something from it -- I'm sure he did -- and can continue on his improvement as a young leg-spinner in terms of experience at international level," added Cook.
Cook also insisted that he has learnt with each game as captain, something which Warne had also conceded. "Absolutely, I've learnt. No doubt. The more you do the job the better you get at it. You can better cope with everything that goes with it," he said.

ISL 2015: Mumbai City FC vs Atletico de Kolkata - Preview

Upbeat Mumbai City FC would be seeking to notch up a fourth win on the trot and shoot their way back to the top two on the table when they take on defending championsAtletico de Kolkata in the Indian Super League clash, here on Sunday.

While the hosts are in fourth position with ten points, the title holders are struggling to keep afloat and are sixth with seven points, badly needing a victory to resurrect their sagging hopes.
It's going to be an uphill struggle for the visitors at the D Y Patil Stadium especially with Mumbai riding a crest of success
ollowing convincing wins over Delhi Dynamos, FC Goa and North East United.
India captain Sunil Chhetri has been in top form, playing as a withdrawn forward and combining beautifully with teammates Sony Norde and Subash Singh up front.
It's going to take all their defensive might to keep the diminutive striker, who scored a hat-trick in the 5-1 drubbing of NEU in Mumbai's last outing, to keep him and the other rampaging forwards at bay.
Mumbai's defense was tested by NEU and kept its slate clean but for the one lapse in the first half.
However, against Kolkata they could not turn complacent and take things lightly even though the visitors are on a losing streak following their third successive defeat against Delhi Dynamos two nights ago.
"It is very disappointing for us. We lost three games in a row," ATK coach Antonio Lopez Habas said 1-0 loss to the Dynamos at the Salt Lake Stadium.
However, he was confident about ATK's qualifying hopes.
"I think so. There are many games to play. We have the possibility to go and qualify," he quipped.
But for this to happen his team has to re-discover some element of the form that helped them clinch the title in the inaugural year of the tournament.
The team lacks a striker because of the injury sustained by marquee player Helder Postiga.
"I don't want to lie. It's clear that we need a striker.
It's very, very clear for all," he said after the disappointing loss to Dynamos.
"I have to recover the mentality of the players because three losses in a row can affect the mentality. We also have injury problems to deal with," he had pointed out about the upcoming clash against Mumbai.
Mumbai, on the other hand, are riding high on the sort of opportunism shown by Chhetri who has scored six goals in the last three matches, albeit two of them were slotted home from the penalty spot, by playing just behind the lead striker Frenchman Frederic Piquionne.
Mumbai FC's assistant coach Oscar Bruzon said after the runaway win over NEU that the team was intent on clinching 20 points by winning their three remaining home games.
"I know we are second on the table. But we are only focusing on Atletico de Kolkata and the main objective of our team is reaching 20 points as soon as possible and I can tell you this will not be easy because we need to win three more games. We have only three more games at home so we want to keep working," he said.
He also said that Chhetri had been a revelation after switching to the middle of the attack, in a withdrawn position.
"In the beginning, he was trying to take a lot of responsibilities at the front. In that moment, when we were trying to play him on the left and on the right and the combination was not working. Then we put Sunil in the bridge between the midfield and the attacking line. And now Sunil is completely exceeding our expectations."

Jared Leto's Halloween party angers neighbours

Los Angeles: "Suicide Squad" star Jared Leto has upset his neighbours when he held a Halloween party at his mansion in the Laurel Canyon area of the Hollywood Hills.

The angry resident took to the neighbourhood's Facebook page to complain that Leto's guests made a lot of noise and blocked people's driveways, reported Ace Showbiz.

"Dear Jared Leto, it's really cool that you're having a party at your compound. Perhaps you could educate all the people coming to your place the proper etiquette of driving uphill/downhill so as not to wreak havoc on the neighbourhood at 10:30pm," read the post.

"Also, your guests should respect the residents and not park on the wrong side of the street blocking other peoples (sic) driveways. Thanks!!" the neighbour added.

"I should be able to drive to my home and park without altercations from entitled people who do not even live in the neighbourhood."

Leto, 43, hasn't responded to the complaint. He only wished everyone "happy halloween" with a zombie GIF and wrote on Twitter, "All work + no play makes Bartholomew a dull boy," along with a link to 30 Seconds to Mars' "The Kill (Bury Me)" music video.

The 39-year-old actress was feted by Jennifer Aniston, Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, Sofia Vergara, and Jennifer Garner among others, reported Ace Showbiz.

"I really thought if I worked hard and did my very, very best, one day I could get Matthew McConaughey to come on a big public stage and say really nice things about me," Witherspoon joked after given the award by the actor.

"I actually think that's pretty much every Southern woman's dream. This whole experience is just overwhelming and unbelievable because I'm really just a girl from Nashville who had a dream," she said.

Twitter to encash millions of logged-out users

Millions of visitors who access Twitter's news, events, and entertainment updates through its home page, and those who access tweets through Google search, are among Twitter's biggest missed revenue opportunities.

Now the company is planning to attempt to make money off people who do not log in, Digital Trends reported.

According to an estimate, around 500 million people view and consume Twitter content every month without ever logging in.

While these visitors have been considered a potential revenue stream in the past, it was only recently that the company policy makers zeroed in on them as an earning source.

"We also are monetising logged-out users across the network. This is the first time that we've been doing that. It's going to come in handy as we also begin to run a pilot here in Q4 for on-Twitter logged out monetisation," COO and revenue chief Adam Bain was quoted as saying.

Facebook to help BSNL set up 100 wi-fi hotspots in rural India

Boosting the government’s ambitious 'Digital India' drive, social media giant Facebook has come forward to facilitate state-run BSNL in setting up100 Wi-Fi sites in rural areas of western and southern India. Facebook will spend Rs 5 crore per annum for sponsoring these 100 wi-fi hotspots in the country.
"Facebook has partnered with us to sponsor 100 Wi-Fi hotspots in villages across west and southern India. They will pay Rs 5 lakh for BSNL bandwidth for each hotspot per annum," BSNL Chairman & MD Anupam Shrivastava told PTI. The hotspots are being set up by BSNL selected vendor Quad Zen.
"We have already set up 25 hotspots under the agreement. Facebook is only sponsoring them and not taking any revenue share. Quad Zen will set up these hotspots and handle sales. There is revenue share model between BSNL and Quad Zen," Shrivastava said.
When contacted, Facebook spokesperson said, "We don't have any comments at this point of time." The agreement between Facebook and BSNL is for three years and it can be further extended for two more years, he said. BSNL has also received interest from Member of Parliaments for setting up wi-fi hotspots in villages, which they have adopted under Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) to make it a model village by 2016.
"Union ministers Nitin Gadkari, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Najma Heptulla and Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan are sponsoring BSNL bandwidth for wi-fi hotspots in the villages that they have adopted under SAGY. BSNL approached MPs explaining this model under MPLAD scheme and over 50 MPs have responded positively to it," Shrivastava said.
He said that the sponsored wi-fi spots are being set-up in addition to 2,500 wifi spots that BSNL is setting up in partnership with Quad Zen and Trimax.
"With Facebook and MPs coming forward, we are being able to set up wi-fi hotspots in area where it is not commercially feasible to run them. We are quickly extending optical fibre connectivity to these hotspots," Shrivastava said.
Under commercial model, Quad Zen will set up 2,000 wi-fi hotspots in West and Southern part of the country and Trimax will set up 500 hotspots in North India.

Jet lag-like sleep disruptions spur Alzheimer's memory loss

Chemical changes in brain cells caused by disturbances in the body's day-night cycle may be a key underlying cause of the learning and memory loss associated with Alzheimer's disease, according to a new study.
The research on mice, led by University of California, Irvine professor Gregory Brewer, provides the first evidence that circadian rhythm-altering sleep disruptions similar to jet lag promote memory problems and chemical alterations in the brain.
Clinical application of this finding may lead to more emphasis on managing the sleep habits of people at risk for Alzheimer's disease and those with mild cognitive impairment.
People with Alzheimer's often have problems with sleeping or may experience changes in their slumber schedule. Scientists do not completely understand why these disturbances occur.
"The issue is whether poor sleep accelerates the development of Alzheimer's disease or vice versa," said Mr Brewer.
"It's a chicken-or-egg dilemma, but our research points to disruption of sleep as the accelerator of memory loss," said Mr Brewer.
In order to examine the link between learning and memory and circadian disturbances, his team altered normal light-dark patterns with an eight-hour
shortening of the dark period every three days for young mouse models of Alzheimer's disease and normal mice.
The resulting jet lag greatly reduced activity in both sets of mice, and the researchers found that in water maze tests, the AD mouse models had significant learning impairments absent in the AD mouse models not exposed to light-dark variations and in normal mice with jet lag.
In follow-up tissue studies, they saw that jet lag caused a decrease in glutathione levels in the brain cells of all the mice. But these levels were much lower in the AD mouse models and corresponded to poor performance in the water maze tests.
Glutathione is a major antioxidant that helps prevent damage to essential cellular components.
Glutathione deficiencies produce redox changes in brain cells. Redox reactions involve the transfer of electrons, which leads to alterations in the oxidation state of atoms and may affect brain metabolism and inflammation.
Brewer pointed to the accelerated oxidative stress as a vital component in Alzheimer's-related learning and memory loss and noted that potential drug treatments could target these changes in redox reactions.
"This study suggests that clinicians and caregivers should add good sleep habits to regular exercise and a healthy diet to maximise good memory," he said.
The study appears in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.

Movie review ‘Mumtaz’: Fall in ‘sleep’

Director: Raghava Murali
Cast: Sharmiela Mandre, Dharma Keerthiraj
Rating: 1 star
We already have so many stars, but we now have a new star - Cadbury star! Yes the actor Dharma Keerthiraj is introduced in the title card as Cadbury Star in Mumtaz directed by the debutant Raghava Murali. Well, speaking on record there is no literal meaning to Cadbury, as it simple refers to the British multinational confectionery company. Jokes apart - Mumtaz is a different love story with so much difference that the director has spent most of his time zooming in on the face of the hero, capturing the minutest emotions which unfortunately stop only at the end!
Wondering what inspired the director to come out with this tale, remains a mystery as Mumtaz is about a guy who is madly in love with a girl since his school days. That’s it! This one is such a killer that easily beats the weirdest of all so called ‘one-way’ love stories. The story unravels with a school play on Shah Jahan and Mumtaz, no guesses on who plays who. The love sprouts, and next the scene shifts from adolescent age to teenage. The boy follows her to college, but never succeeds in expressing his love. The director’s talent in depicting the hardest ever proposal on big screen is ‘truly’ commendable. The only motto of the protagonist is to attempt making his proposals and Sharmiela Mandre’s is to look and talk pretty. The supporting characters have no role to play and the director has ‘heavily’ relied upon the close up shots of the hero and heroine all the time. A bus stop, college campus, a temple are literally the few locations that apart from the ‘dream’ songs. Even the cameo appearance by Darshan fails to give a boost to the super-slow love story. Will the hero finally express his love before it’s too late? If still willing to watch, then go before Mumtaz disappears from your nearby screens. However, this one could help those who are suffering from sleep disorders, as it proposes a sound sleep without fail.

Movie review ‘Bettanagere’: Encountering the raw story

Director: Mohan Gowda
Cast: Sumanth Shailendra, Akshay, Avinash, Shobraj, Vinod Kambli, Naina Sarwar
Rating: 1.5 stars
The director rightly claims it a ‘raw' story! In adjective meaning - inexperienced, as it is evident throughout the movie which opens up with Shiva’s (portrayed by Sumanth Shailendra) version of how he and his cousin brother (Shekara played by Akshay) ended up on the wrong side of the society. With Madhu Gowda being a close relative of Bettanagere Seena and Shankar (notorious rowdies), based on whose real-life incidents the film is made, it seems he has made it with the sole intention of showcasing their goodness rather than doing justice to the ‘raw’ subject.
While Bettanagere Seena is Shiva, and Shankara is Shekara here in the reel Bettanagere, the plot naturally revolves around the two cousin brothers, and how they turned anti-elements. The reality starts biting with utter casting - Sumanth just does not fit the bill to someone as dreaded as a rowdy sheeter who was finally shot dead in an encounter in real life. It is very sloppy which guarantees headache, all due to the raw effect by the director and dismal acting skills makes it more intolerable including the former cricketer Vinod Kambli playing a hopeless character. An uncool tattoo on his shaved head, Vinod struggles on his acting side, which is nothing short of his struggling days as a cricketer. His character too ends like his cricketing career, abruptly!
The best part of it all is the heroine’s role which is limited to two ‘short’ scenes and a song with no sense at all. In a nutshell – two brothers with a happy life of their own, one in brick-making family business and another aspiring to get into military accidentally get into the bloody local politics and soon find themselves in a tricky situation after Shankara murders one of the supporters of a local leader played by Avinash. They seek the help of a MLA played by Shobraj. In turn politics plays on them and soon Shiva makes entry in the local underworld, while he is still on the run. Later, its Shekara’s turn and eventually the brothers are up in arms against each other. The director ends it with an announcement of a sequel to Bettanagere! Now that sounds like a word of caution after witnessing his debut raw story.

ISL 2: Hosts Kerala hold Chennaiyin

Kerala Blasters missed a crucial second-half penalty kick and had to settle for a 1-1 draw against rivals Chennaiyin FC in the Hero Indian Super League here on Saturday.

Chennaiyin FC had taken the lead through Elano Blumer’s spot kick in the 34th minute and Chris Dagnall drew level for the hosts 15 seconds after play restarted in the second session.

Kerala Blasters won a penalty in the 52nd minute but Josue Prieto’s low attempt was kept away by Chennaiyin FC goalkeeper Karanjit Singh. Chennaiyin FC surged ahead with only their second shot on target in the first session. The goal came through the boots of Elano from a penalty after Sandesh Jhingan brought down Stiven Mendoza inside the box, even though the Colombian striker had no chance of reaching the cross.

Elano does not make mistakes from the spot and the Brazilian made no mistake by sending Kerala Blasters goalkeeper Stephen Bywater the wrong way.

Premier League: Halloween scare for Jose Mourinho

Liverpool’s coach Jurgen Klopp (second from right) celebrates with his players on the pitch after their 3-1 victory over defending champions Chelsea in their English Premier League match at Stamford Bridge stadium in London on Saturday.
London: Philippe Coutinho struck twice as Liverpool won 3-1 at Chelsea on Saturday to ratchet up the pressure yet further on the Premier League champions’ beleaguered manager Jose Mourinho.

Ramires put the hosts ahead in the fourth minute at Stamford Bridge, but Coutinho equalised in first-half stoppage time and put Liverpool ahead with a deflected shot in the 74th minute before substitute Christian Benteke rubber-stamped Chelsea’s sixth defeat in 11 league games.

While visiting manager Jurgen Klopp was left to celebrate his first league win — Liverpool’s first on the road since the season’s opening weekend — it was a Halloween nightmare for Mourinho, whose job is thought to be on the line after a run of just one win in eight matches in all competitions.

Klopp said: “I feel it’s deserved. We worked hard, but if you want to win at Chelsea, you have to work hard.” Mourinho made just one change to the team eliminated from the League Cup by Stoke City in mid-week, with Cesar Azpilicueta replacing Baba Rahman, which meant that Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic remained on the bench.

Diego Costa passed a fitness test after bruising a rib at the Britannia Stadium and he wasted no time in making an impact. The Spain striker’s back-heel on the left-hand touchline freed Azpilicueta to cross from the left and Ramires stole in front of Alberto Moreno to celebrate his new four-year contract by heading in the opening goal. It was the kind of start that has eluded Mourinho of late and it allowed Chelsea to retreat into their own territory, but in vain.

Tamil Nadu Congress flays arrest of folk singer; will stage protest on November 2

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President EVKS Elangovan on Saturday slammed the arrest of a folk singer campaigning for closure of state-run liquor outlets and said his will stage a demonstration here on November 2 in protest against the police action.
Terming the arrest of Kovan at Tiruchirappalli for alleged sedition yesterday as a "murder of freedom of expression", he said such an action amounted to 'authoritarian rule.'
"Protesting the police action, the party will stage a demonstration here outside the Head Post Office at Anna Salai on Monday," he said in a statement.
Kovan, a 54-year-old propagandist singer of ultra Left arts and literary outfit 'Makkal Kalai Ilakkiya Kazhagam', was arrested for alleged sedition, uploading defamatory electronic content against Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and disturbing public peace.
Flaying the BJP government at the Centre, Elangovan said already "instances of intolerance" leading to killings of writers and scholars such as MM Kalburgi and Narendra Dabholkar had taken place, against which academicians, historians and artistes had shown their opposition by returning awards.

Arctic attracting new military scrutiny

In 2013, US President Barack Obama said the Arctic was "peaceful, stable, and free of conflict" as he laid out a national strategy for the region.
But just two years later, the rapid retreat of ocean ice cover, a newly emboldened Russia and the covetous gaze of nations keen to exploit new shipping lanes and vast mineral wealth are putting the Arctic's longstanding stability under pressure.
"The Arctic is a region that is getting more and more important," US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said on Friday as he visited troops at Fort Wainwright in the Alaskan city of Fairbanks, about 320 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle.
"It'll be important to the United States, it'll be important to other countries. It'll be important that we keep the peace and a rules-based kind of order."
Alaska and the Arctic are of key strategic importance for the United States.
Missile defense systems are here and planes can overfly the North Pole to quickly reach destinations across the Northern Hemisphere. But budget constraints mean the Pentagon is weighing plans to slash the presence of some 2,600 specialized cold-weather troops at a base in Anchorage.
Meanwhile, Russia launched elaborate Arctic war games this summer involving thousands of troops as it tries to bolster claims to the region's vast hydrocarbon and mineral wealth.
And when Obama visited Alaska the following month, five Chinese naval vessels were spotted in the Bering Sea between Russia and Alaska. It was believed to be the first time Chinese military ships were seen in the area.
Critics of the Obama administration say the United States is failing to grasp an urgent need to boost US military might in the Arctic region.
"Am I predicting a Russian invasion of Alaska next week? No. But does it make sense to be withdrawing our well-trained Arctic warriors in the face of this? Strategically it doesn't make any sense," Republican Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska said.
A 2013 Pentagon strategy document for the Arctic warned against promoting a high profile for the US military in the region, saying it could trigger escalating rivalries with other armies.
"There is some risk that the perception that the Arctic is being militarized may lead to an 'arms race' mentality," it said.
A new 'cold' war?
After Vladimir Putin began his third term as Russian president in 2012, he started trying to boost his country's dominance in its Arctic region. Sullivan this week read out a list of alarming statistics to the Senate Armed Services Committee about Russia's military commitment.
He said a new Russian Arctic command will include four new Arctic brigades, 50 airfields by 2020, increased long-range air patrols by Russian bombers and a total of 40 conventional and nuclear icebreakers, with 11 more planned.
Many of the bases will be refurbished Cold War facilities that had fallen into disrepair after the collapse of the Soviet Union. By contrast, the United States only has two icebreakers and one of them is broken, Sullivan said. He suggested America needs at least four more.
"It's a joke," he said of the Pentagon's current Arctic plans. "It's not a serious military strategy document." More than 20 percent of the world's hydrocarbon reserves yet to be discovered are situated in the Arctic, the US Geological Survey has said.
US emphasis on Asia-Pacific
Carter's visit to Alaska is his first stop on an eight-day trip primarily focused on the Asia-Pacific region.
He will meet with leaders from more than a dozen nations across East and South Asia. Officially, his mission is to help push the next phase of America's "rebalance" to the vitally important region.
But a central theme of the trip is likely to be China's continued construction of artificial islands in the South China Sea and claims of sovereignty. Last week, the US military sent a destroyer within a 12-mile zone of one group of islets claimed by China, in a move that infuriated Beijing.
Carter will attend a US-South Korea security meeting in Seoul, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations defense ministers meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

We know a big knock from Hashim Amla is round the corner: Russell Domingo

South Africa coach Russell Domingo did not sound too worried about the indifferent form shown so far on the tour by Test captain Hashim Amla, even if the opening Test of the four-match contest is just round the corner.
"Amla is a quality player. We know a big knock from him is round the corner. He's batting well in the nets," said Domingo in his post-match press conference at the Brabourne stadium after the drawn two-day practice encounter against Indian cricket Board President's XI.
Amla was dismissed for 1 by Board President's XI medium pacer Shardul Thakur on Saturday morning, caught edging to the slip cordon.
Amla, who has scored 6770 runs in 84 Tests with 23 hundreds to his credit - four of which had been made in six previous matches in India, and having a healthy career average of 52-plus, has had a poor run on this tour that started with the T20 series against the hosts.
His sequence of scores have been 36 and 21 in the completed T20 internationals, 37, 17, 5, 7 and 23 in the five ODIs followed by his lowest score today.
South Africa's best batsman and in-form ODI captain, AB de Villiers, scored a superb 112 off 131 balls with 18 hits to the fence, and Domingo said he was easing back into the Test mindset after missing the tour to Bangladesh.
"AB (de Villiers) last played a Test match in January against the West Indies and missed the Bangladesh tour. That's why he was leaving a few balls (without attacking them)," said Domingo about de Villiers' ton, his fourth on the tour after his triple in the 3-2 ODI series victory.
On the composition of the team's spin attack in the first Test starting at Mohali next week, Domingo said it will depend on the conditions of the pitch laid out for the game.
"We have been hearing about a spin-friendly surface being prepared. We will look at the conditions and then decide. There are a few options. Imran Tahir is an attacking option as he's an aggressive bowler," he said.
On the injury status to fast bowler Morne Morkel, who bowled only five overs without conceding a run here, the visiting team's coach said there would be a fitness test for the lanky bowler "closer to the commencement of the Test match".
On JP Duminy, the coach said that the batting all-rounder was scheduled to have the stitches taken out of the webbing of his right hand next week. "The stitches would be removed next week, but the hand would be a bit tender," he said, hinting that Duminy may not be fit to play the game.
The coach was happy with the way wicketkeeper Dane Vilas, who was not part of the limited overs squad, batted in the company of de Villiers and put on a century stand for the seventh wicket while making 58 in 108 minutes, studded with seven fours.
"Dane Vilas was very good. He had kept well in Bangladesh too. He's a good player of spin," said Domingo.
He expected India to come hard at the visitors after losing both the T20 and ODI series against South Africa. "They are a formidable side in their conditions. They must be hurting at the defeats in T20 and ODI series. We know they are going to be a tough challenge," he said.
